Malvern

Wall hanging - 80 x 100 cm
Cotton, linen, Hand stitched, with a linen binding.

Made from layered and collage appliqué piecing. Each shape is hand-stitched in place and then the backing fabric is removed to create an organic piece patchwork quilt top.

This quilted wall hanging was a joy to create. The brief for this commission was for a timeless, contemporary heirloom piece to welcome a new borne into the family. They requested something that would grow up with the family and be a reminder of an inherent connection to nature, heritage and place.

I worked with abstract shapes and colour blocking to create my take on a textiles landscape. Working with the colours and shapes to instil a sense of movement and connection between the organic shapes.

This piece has been created from textiles seconds, remnants and end of roll cloth from my collection of textiles. Combining cotton, linen textiles in various weaves and textures. It includes some vintage, sun-faded cotton which adds subtle colour variants across the fabric, which I love. I personally enjoy working with textiles that have been dyed or faded and embracing the variations in colour they can bring to the work.
