House of Quinn is a multidisciplinary studio, founded by artist and maker Julius in 2016. Rooted in the intersection of art, design, and craft, the practice explores process, material, and meaning through the dialogue between traditional craft techniques and contemporary design narratives.
At its core, House of Quinn creates small-batch collections of quilts, textiles, and unique objects for abode and dwelling—pieces imbued with a sense of place and function, reflective of our daily rituals, and destined to become part of our personal collections. We work with what exists. Reclaimed textiles, found objects, and natural materials are transformed into works that balance concept and function, inviting reflection and connection.
Drawing upon traditional techniques and fundamental making practices, Julius’s work reveals an intuitive relationship with materials—textiles, paper, collage, print, ink, paint, and sculpture. Each work evolves through process, experimentation, and discovery, where ideas take shape through making. Quilts, in particular, have become a defining element of the practice, offering a way to explore materiality through layering and stitching while investigating ideas of form, memory, and belonging.
Having grown up in Cornwall, Julius’s work is deeply influenced by the landscape and a sense of home. Each object carries echoes of continuity and the belief that the things we use daily hold the weight of memory and meaning.
Julius is the author of Modern Quilting: A Contemporary Guide to Quilting by Hand, reflecting his ongoing commitment to textiles, making, and the art of quilting.
House of Quinn celebrates the handmade, the imperfect, and the enduring value of objects crafted with care—honouring the past while looking to the future.
Principles
Exploration // We make what we have. Guided by experimentation and resourcefulness, each piece emerges through fundamental techniques and a commitment to discovery. Textures, colour, and form evolve through process, constructing narratives that hold a connection to materiality and design.
Reflection // Our work is rooted in the places we inhabit and the rituals that shape us. Through an intimate dialogue with landscapes and everyday objects, we create pieces that reflect a sense of belonging and continuity.
Material // We work with what already exists — reclaimed textiles, papers, and found materials. Through stitching, layering, dyeing, and assemblage, we transform these fragments into works that carry their histories forward while offering something new.
An Invitation // House of Quinn is an invitation to make, to reflect, and to connect. Through workshops and shared resources, we celebrate the act of making and the stories embedded in materials, offering a space to explore their meaning and possibilities.
Process
The collections encompass original textile works, quilts, fine art prints, and handmade objects, all created in small runs. Each collection is inspired by a central narrative, manifesting in individual one-off artworks or series that evolve over time.
Julius approaches making and design with careful consideration, employing traditional craft techniques and practices. By consciously sourcing reclaimed textiles and materials, each piece is designed to endure and to be cherished.
All items, including both functional pieces and original artworks, are meticulously crafted in-house or in collaboration with local makers who hand-finish each piece. Fabrics are sourced from local suppliers, markets, deadstock, vintage textiles, and certified sources. House of Quinn is committed to sustainability, continually seeking ways to repurpose studio waste, whether through reuse or by sharing materials with other makers.
