An Act of Making with Modern Art Hire

As we slowly get our heads around moving forward and working on new ways to navigate the world and our creative practices, it has been a joy to be able to connect with people in person and experience art and design in its most appropriate setting. IRL.

September saw the return of London Design Week and with it, a surge of invigorated excitement and newfound energy to discover new work, see the artists we love and admire and gather (safely) to connect with friends and new communities.

During this September’s design events that took place all over London, Modern Art Hire put on two shows. One at their new showroom, 50 Vyner Street, London and the second ‘An Act of Making’ at Yorkton Workshops. Both shows were carefully curated, with beautiful edits of art, objects and furniture displayed from floor to ceiling.

I was delighted to be asked to join the Modern Art Hire family of artists, makers and designers whose work graces the walls of 50 Vyner street and also the Modern Art Hire online gallery.

Set up by Laura Fulmine. Modern Art Hire is a showroom of contemporary work curated with a focus on offering unique work for hire and purchase. Supporting emerging and established artists to connect with stylists, interior designers, publications and set designers looking for unique work and objects. Vice versa gives these industries a platform to easily source new and exciting work for use in their projects.

An Act of Making showcase has a focus on artists that “boldly express the making process”. Displaying work that had been hand-coiled, carved, woven, painted, built and sculpted.

I was able to show five textile collage works that were inspired by my personal recollections of time spent on the moors of Cornwall. Working with hand-painted and printed textiles, I explored fundamental processes and techniques such a mono-printing onto Linen and cotton. Merging the organic and landscape like textures of the mark-making with large graphic shapes, stitches and quilting.

The collection consists of three smaller, framed works. small textile vignettes that capture abstract views of the moors as well as two banner-like wall hangings that during the making process took on a feeling of clan banners, stating their land and marking their terratory.

Set against the contemporary and warehouse aesthetic of Yorkton Studio the work highlighted the architectural setting while also creating a visual flow through the three rooms.
