Workshop - Collaging with Cloth: Layering, Shape & Stitch

£65.00

DATE & TIME: Fri 12 Dec 2025, 18:00–20:30 GMT

A painterly approach to textiles. In this workshop, you'll create your own stitched fabric collage using remnants, hand sewing, and a curated colour palette to explore shape and composition.

Full Description

This workshop invites you to approach textiles as collage—cutting, layering, arranging, and stitching fabric into expressive, abstract compositions. Working with remnants and scraps, we’ll take cues from paper collage and abstract painting, using shape, line, and contrast to guide our designs.

You’ll be introduced to simple appliqué and hand-stitching techniques to secure and define your compositions. Along the way, we’ll consider rhythm, balance, and how colour relationships influence form.

The focus is intuitive and tactile—no measuring or patterns required. Whether you’re exploring textiles for the first time or returning to your practice from a new angle, this is a space to play, compose, and create something grounded in both material and feeling.

How to Join

After booking, you’ll receive an email with a link to submit attendee details. Zoom links will be sent to registered attendees before the workshop. A recording will be available for 14 days after the session.

  • Base fabric or background: A few neutral or plain pieces of fabric or calico to build your collage on (A4 or larger). You may want to create a patchwork background or plain background to work on,

  • Needle and thread: Hand sewing thread and a needle you’re comfortable using. Embroidery thread is also fine for a bolder line.

  • Fabric scissors: Sharp scissors for precise cutting.

  • Pins, basting thread: For temporarily holding your design in place before stitching

  • Optional tools: Thimble, small ruler, iron, or cutting mat if helpful.

  • Freezer paper or regular paper for creating templates to use in your work. (link to this product here)

Who the Workshop is For

This workshop is for anyone with some basic hand-sewing experience who is interested in working more freely with fabric. It’s ideal for those who want to explore composition, loosen up creatively, or translate painterly ideas into cloth through a slow, process-led approach.
