House of Quinn x Keiokairai, Japan

House of Quinn’s first solo exhibition at Keiokairai. 13th March 2021

I am delighted to announce House of Quinn’s first solo exhibition in Japan at the Keiokairai gallery, Kyoto.

Running from the 13th March 2021. I am exhibiting a collection of twenty handmade bags and four hanging textiles works created from hand-painted and stitched linen and cotton.

You can view the exhibition video, and experience the full show in the video above.

The work is a continuation of the Caster Collection, which I created in 2020. An exploration into the forms and ideas around the ‘caster’ in its or their, many forms.

Noun. caster (plural casters) Someone or something that casts. A caster of spells; a caster of stones; a caster of bronze statuary.

you can read more about the inspiration and first collection of work from this series here

The video, which was created to sit alongside the exhibition, shows a highlight of the process and a glimpse into the day to day of the studio here in Brighton, where I work from my home. The sound of the busy roads outside the house provides a backdrop to the contemplative process of making inside.

Each object in the collection is one of a kind and each bag has it’s own characteristics, pattern or composition. Inspired by vessels used for ‘casting’ the simple, bucket-like form of the bag is reminiscent of vessels used to catch fish, forage for ingredients, a place to keep oddments, trinkets and personal items.

More images from the exhibition and collection will be posted and shared as the exhibition opens in March
