‘Animal, Vegetable, Mineral’ the name of this years summer exhibition at The New Craftsmen, Mayfair celebrates materials and craft.

“The exhibition has provided us with the opportunity to seek out new makers who champion materiality, and position the roots and fundamentals of making at the heart of their work. The show will focus on the elemental and primitive – the discovery from making.”

The New Craftsmen

Open to the public, the exhibition showcases a selection of 17 makers across different craft practises and disciplines. From textiles, ceramics, glass, furniture, rugs and more.

I was invited to create a series of limited edition patchwork quilted cushions for the show. Inspired by the Cornish landscape and the stone circles of the South West (my home county) the collection was entitled 'Trigva' meaning abode or home in Cornish.

Each cushion is created from a collage of patchwork, applique and quilting to create one of a kind textile compositions on each cushion. the textiles used in the cushions was a curated selection of vintage and found cottons and linens, which have been incorporated with hand painted textiles remnants. Mark making on fabric, to bring pattern and texture into the collages.

I attended the opening of the show to meet the other makers and designer and admire all of the work that way on display.

The launch of the show was an amazing event, with cocktails supplied by Our London and served in the conservatory of the Mayfair showroom. The showroom was busy with the bustle and conversations about craft and as we went around the room the curation of work which was put together by Sue Parker. An edit that was intriguing and tactile, every piece made you want to go up to it and touch it to interrogate its intricacies.

I had the opportunity to speak to some of the other makers at the show, talking about their amazing work and inspiration. Local Maker Tom of Holland also based in Brighton displayed his work, looking at mending old items and giving them a new life.

If you are in London and want to pop into the show. You can find them easily at the end of oxford street, going towards Marble arch - Click here for a map.

The Show is on from the 21st June - 9th September.
