Assemblage quilts
The Assemblage Quilts mark an early body of work by artist Julius Arthur, created under the practice House of Quinn between 2018 and 2020. These one-of-a-kind hand-quilted textiles explore the meeting point of modern quilting, textile art, and abstraction. Constructed from cut forms in cotton and linen, each piece studies the relationship between balance, proportion, and material composition.
In these works, Arthur moves away from traditional quilt blocks to create something more painterly — an approach grounded in the tactile process of hand quilting yet expressive in its use of shape and space. The series draws influence from modernist design and mid-century art, transforming the language of quilting into a medium for visual rhythm and emotional connection.
The Assemblage Quilts form a quiet bridge between art and function, reflecting the early evolution of Arthur’s abstract style. Through layering, stitching, and subtle variation, they reveal a commitment to craftsmanship and a deep respect for material. Seen collectively, these contemporary quilts trace the foundations of a practice that continues to explore the boundaries of abstract quilts, design, and modern textile art.
