Ceramic Water/Sake Jar and Cup from Ryusei Kiln - Japanese Stoneware Studio Pottery

£120.00

Origin: Yokkaichi, Japan - Ryusei Kiln
Material: Glazed ceramic, marked but unattributed
Height: approx. 18cm

A vintage Japanese ceramic water or sake jar from the Ryusei Kiln in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture - a region known for its production of functional ceramics in the Banko Ware tradition.
For decades, everyday items such as teacups and plates were made in Yokkaichi, with the city's ceramic heritage still celebrated annually at the Banko Festival.

This piece is finished in a rich earth-toned candy glaze. The form is both practical and sculptural, accompanied by a matching cup which also forms the lid of the jar.

The mark on the side may indicate that it was originally made as a graduation gift for a high school tea ceremony club in 1973, though its exact origin is undocumented.

Comes with its original wooden tomobako (storage box), inscribed with calligraphy.

Excellent condition.
