Caer Collection

CAER is a series of eight hand-framed relief works that explore form, surface, and memory through natural materials and earthy tone. The title comes from caer — a word found in both Cornish and Welsh, meaning fort or stronghold. Rooted in the Celtic language family, it appears in place names across ancient landscapes, marking sites of enclosure, protection, and quiet resilience. These ideas are carried through the work — spaces held, forms protected, boundaries gently defined.

Each piece is made using fabric remnants, carefully arranged and pressed over cut forms to create a raised, tactile surface. The cloth — mostly linen offcuts — is chosen for its softness, irregularity, and lived-in quality. Once set, each surface is hand-finished with layers of earth pigment. These pigments, in tones of terracotta, brick, and peat, settle into the fabric’s folds and textures, revealing form and depth. The surface is then sealed, leaving a dry, mineral finish that echoes the natural colours of soil and stone.

Part textile artwork, part low relief sculpture, the CAER series reflects a materially grounded approach to contemporary wall-based art — each piece handmade, individually framed, and shaped by process.
