A Guide to Contemporary Quilting with Create Academy

I am delighted to announce my first-ever online quilting course has launched with Create Academy.

A Guide to Contemporary Quilting

Five Hours of online lessons which take you through the fundamental building blocks to becoming a confident quilter. Discover the core skills of quilt making, learn how to create modern patterns with shape, colour and negative space, as well as outlining patchwork and abstract applique techniques and the basics of quilt construction.

Quilting is a great way to ustalise materials that we have to hand to create beautiful objects for the home. from old clothing to leftover curtain fabrics or old tablecloths. Salvaging waste materials to create something new that will become a prized object in your home is such a rewarding feeling and I hope that this course will inspire people to give it a go and discover the joy of creating their own textiles.

The course is broken down into bitesize video sections. Taking you through an introduction to myself and my creative practice, and showing your all the fundamental core skills you will need to create quilts and quilted textile projects. The main focus of the course is around using informal, improvised patchwork and applique techniques. I will then show you how to apply those techniques to create a small patchwork quilt or wall hanging and a quilted, applique cushion. Once you have learnt the basics, you will be ably to apply your new skills to large projects and create full size quilts or other items for the home. The course is focused on more contemporary techniques and approach to quilt making. How to patchwork in a freeform style using materials and tools we have to hand in our homes.

The projects in the course have been inspired by my childhood memories and motifs of growing up in Cornwall. Using simple shapes and looking at how to work with colour and form to create simple but effective compositions. I hope that my process inspires you to look for inspiration around you, from memories to objects in the house that provide you with joy and connection.

It has been an amazing experience, filming my first online course. Something that I was very nervous about as I am not fond of appearing in photos and especially video. My practice is something that I like to share and my work is a process that is personal to me, I enjoy it as a way of focusing and escaping from the day to day grind. Filming the process was daunting, but the Create Academy team have supported me to create a beautiful and accessible course that I hope you all enjoy.
